Relationships between people and land to be showcased in upcoming From the Collection program

virtual series shows the mosaic of people and things inside the society’s archives
Kona Historical Society is excited to announce the second installment of their new virtual series, From the Collection. This program was launched in September 2020 and highlights the Society’s archives, historic sites, and the people, places and things in our community. Typically held on the last Wednesday of every month, participants will discover unseen objects from the Society’s collections, learn how to care for family heirlooms, get behind-the-scenes sneak peeks of historic sites, and hear Kona’s stories.
For the second installment, “Aloha ‘Āina: Relationships Between People & Place Through Time,” Kona Historical Society will welcome guest speaker and Resource Manager Natalie Kurashima, Ph.D. Weaving together oral histories, photos, and maps from the Society’s Jean Greenwell Library & Archive, as well as some of Dr. Kurashima's published biocultural research, we will reflect together on the ways in which ‘āina cares for people and people care for ‘āina.
“Last month we were able to talk story about bread, baking, and the families that pioneered that industry in Kona,” said Kona Historical Society Public Programs Manager Audrey Blair. “Many of us contemplated our own family connections to that story and this has in part inspired this month’s topic. We hope our Aloha ‘Āina program will build upon that grounding sense that comes when we learn more about the history in Kona.”
“Aloha ‘Āina: Relationships Between People & Place Through Time” begins at 1 p.m. on October 28 and will be live streamed on Kona Historical Society’s Facebook Page via a Zoom Webinar. Viewers are welcome to watch on either platform, but registration is required to participate on Zoom.

While the From the Collection series is free to view, Kona Historical Society welcomes donations of any size in support of this new program series and our nonprofit. Kona Historical Society is a community-based, nonprofit organization and Smithsonian Affiliate that has spent the past four decades collecting, preserving and sharing the history of the Kona districts and their rich cultural heritage within Hawaii.
