FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Shirts still available for purchase until Aug. 26

With grateful hearts and much excitement, Kona Historical Society is proud to announce that our nonprofit has reached its original goal for its special T-shirt fundraiser.

Last Thursday, Kona Historical Society and its Board President Lisa Greenwell Hummel launched a fundraiser selling a shirt that celebrates Konaʻs ranching history and supports our nonprofit. With great ambition, the target was to sell 200 shirts in 200 days. As of noon today (Aug. 14), just one week after this fundraiser began, 200 shirts have been sold, raising nearly $2,000 for Kona Historical Society. Incredible!

This unique shirt (shown above on the left) was designed by Kona Historical Society Board President Lisa Greenwell Hummel with the help of Programs Director Kuʻulani Auld. It displays some of the brands that were registered in 1856 with His Excellency, John Young, Minister of Interior, in Kona, Hawaiʻi. The document, showing the brands, came from Kona Historical Society’s collections inside the Jean Greenwell Library & Archive. Thirty of the registered brands were selected for the design on the back of this shirt. Each brand represents a family business, is in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, and is one of Kona’s heritage traditions. Also, featured on the shirt are a saddle and the words “Kona Historical Society,” “Kona’s Ranching Heritage,” and “Kona Cowboys 1856.”

Due to the overwhelming support and interest, Kona Historical Society and Hummel launched earlier this week another fundraiser featuring a second shirt. The newest appealing piece of apparel (shown above on the right) features our logo and the three pillars of our mission: to collect, preserve and share the history of the Kona districts. This shirt not only shows your support to the world, your purchase also directly supports our nonprofit. The goal is to again sell 200 shirts.

Both shirts are only available on Bonfire, a print-on-demand custom apparel company that works a lot like the crowdfunding platform GoFundMe, giving most of the sales back to the effort it honors. On Bonfire, individuals and groups alike can design shirts for causes they care about and post an accompanying story about the significance of the movement and design.

While the original campaignʻs target has been met, Kona Historical Society isnʻt ending the fundraisers. Those interested can still buy the Kona ranching brands shirt at https://www.bonfire.com/kona-historical-society-fundraiser/ Purchase the nonprofitʻs mission-related shirt at https://www.bonfire.com/kona-historical-society-fundraiser-2/ Both fundraisers end Aug. 26 and shipping begins Sept. 3.

"We are thrilled to see that this fundraiser had proven to be a great success in such a short period of time! We've met our goal, but I'm looking forward to seeing how we can exceed expectations before both T-shirt fundraisers end," said Kona Historical Society Executive Director Dance Aoki. "We are extremely grateful to Board President Lisa Greenwell Hummel. Not only has she fully embraced her leadership role helping Kona Historical Society navigate uncharted waters, she is also one of our greatest champions in contributing her artistic talents towards our success through fundraisers like these. Mahalo nui for all you do, Lisa!"
