Explore our Collections

From our humble beginnings with just a handful of photographs and records in 1978, we’ve grown our collections into an extensive record of the people, places, and history of Kona. The stories found in our archives paint a vivid picture of post-contact life in Kona, one that we strive to share with locals and visitors alike.

Kalukalu

The H.N. Greenwell Store Museum, the Portuguese Stone Oven, the Kalukalu Pasture and our administrative offices are all located on a 3-acre site in the ahupuaʻa ʻili known as Kalukalu, in the city of Kealakekua.*

*Out of abundance of caution, Kona Historical Society has temporarily closed all of its in-person programs and physical sites to the general public until further notice to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and any respiratory illnesses.

Jean Greenwell Library & Archive

Created and nurtured by Jean Greenwell for over 30 years, this archive consists of collections of historical photographs, unpublished diaries, journals, letters, family records and memorabilia, land documents, selected Kona newspapers and articles and more.

Kona Historical Society members and the public can reserve research time to explore the Library and its many collections.

Digital resources

During these challenging times, Kona Historical Society has been expanding our digital resources, many of which are free to the public. Explore our online exhibit, Made in Kona, listen to stories of Kona told through videos and oral histories; or join Maile Melrose for her Meanderings.

Stay tuned for more exciting additions to our digital resources in the coming year!

Hawaiian Kingdom Records

The Kingdom of Hawaiʻi Tax Ledgers for the district of Kona have been digitized from the original documents held by the Hawaiʻi State Archives, and we have made them available for you here. Most are recorded in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, but some of the later ledgers are in English as well. Click on the links below to download the files.

Made possible through a grant from the County of Hawaiʻi Department of Research and Development.
